The painter wanted to spiritually link man and animal, by representing an Inuit, a community still moved by the spirits of totems such as Nanuq (the spirit of the polar bear in Inuit) or amaruq (the spirit of the wolf, a protector of sorts since it takes weak or sick animals and thus keeps the herds healthy).
She had the chance to discover in immersion the extent of the spiritual interactions of nature and men that still animate the life of the first peoples.
